A few years ago we spent a fabulous couple of weeks touring Iceland and birding, finding wonderful arctic plants and drinking really expensive beer. This photograph was taken near midnight in the very far north of Iceland just outside Akureyri.
After the spring flowers on the uncut lawn area (the mead) we are now beginning to see the appearance of summer grassland flowers – including four species of clovers.
Why would anyone have a mown lawn and miss these pleasures?
Mid-summer’s Day and we were out in the sun, dripping wet searching for birds (successfully) when we passed this garden along Cemetery Lane. Can’t get more high summer than this.
Three years ago a group of Arboretum volunteers created the “Canada 150 Trail” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the creation of Canada.Quite by chance it was found this year that the Birch Alley that forms part of the trail is directly oriented towards the setting sun for the few days around mid-summer’s day, the Summer Equinox.
Absolutely NO adjustments to the colour saturation was made in preparing these photographs – these colours are what our eyes saw. Well, what oour eyes saw through the clouds of ravenous mosquitoes, that is ;)
This Blue Jay had been bathing in the waterfall header pool and decided to sit on the handle of my spade to dry out – doubtless impersonating a Euro Robin.
