The Great Serviceberry Heist

A few days ago, a friend asked how we prevent squirrels stealing our Amelanchier canadensis berries and all I could say was that aorund here the squirrels never get a chance as the Robins get there first.

This is a young bush and the branches are quite whippy so each time the birds stretch out to take a berry they tend to fall off and have to eat it on the ground before returning for more. Once they have finished with the Amelanchiers the sour cherries will be just about ripe enough to attract them … will we ever get to eat out own fruit?
