Herons (Great Blue ones in this case) evolved to make a living in a watery environment surrounded by fish and frogs. Today a rather confused one circled low over our garden twice before perching in the huge larch tree to think about things for a bit.
We are used, as regular readers know, to small songbirds etc visiting our small and fishless pool but this was something else. A very confused bird and an additional tick the garden list for 2014.
Going outside to get a photo it was, of course, spooked as birds are by a white lens being pointed at them and disappeared and not in the direction of the nearest river – but not before having its nether regions captured for posterity.
