Big holes

For over half an hour this morning a female Pileated Woodpecker has been hacking letterboxes (two) near the base of the Catalpa tree in the garden. Woodpeckers like this tree as it is not a healthy tree and so has food wriggling around in it (though it is putting up strong new shoots form the base) but this was a major attack. I think the tree’s life is limited.

Very smart bird though – and look at the size and characteristic shape of those holes which it knocked out in no time at all. You can see the size of the splinters she is breaking off on the snow all around – pretty impressive.
