A woodpecker that doesn’t peck wood

Continuing the late summer theme of juvenile (new) birds who are starting out in life in our garden, we have been joined in the last few days by a young Northern Flicker. Taxonomically, these are woodpeckers but they don’t peck wood, preferring to stomp around the lawn seeking ants’ nests, of which there are several, from which to make a meal.

Rather handsome birds.
