A variety of flying creatures

Hot again but plenty going on in the neighbourhood.  This is the time of year when it’s good to be a generalist in the biological world as the birds are less forthcoming about their presence but the heat brings out all sorts of other interesting creatures to take ones attention.

Our trees, or those next door, appear to have raised a small family of Great Crested Flycatchers who have been around the garden today going whoop – whoop (whoop is what I hear, but the books say they are calling whit). One of the juniors posed nicely for his portrait.

Meanwhile various flowers are receiving the attention of bees and wasps. The bees are easy to photograph as they tend to get down to business but the wasps (species unknown) only pause for a moment before zipping off to another flower.
